Last week, at Wind&Bones, we launched our latest project, working to commision new stories in Taiwanese (Tâi-gí) and Gaelic, and translating between the two languages.
We started thinking about this project a year ago, when we were reflecting on the parallel experiences of language suppression and revival in Scotland and Taiwan. So we decided to get together a group of writers from both countries to write new literary works, and to work collaboratively on translating these works into each other’s languages.
We have secured a small grant from the Scottish Government’s Scottish Connections Fund for the project, and I spent last week setting up the project website. You can visit the website here.
We’ll be publishing the stories and translations in March 2025, and we’ll be publishing the stories in a handsome new paperback some time mid-2025. Meanwhile, alongside trying to improve my Tâi-gí, I’m spending the next few months trying to make inroads into studying Scottish Gaelic (for resources to help with both languages, you can go to the taigael.com website).
