Snapshots of Museum Experience (with Elee Kirk)
Snapshots of Museum Experience: Understanding Child Visitors Through Photography is due to be published by Routledge in their Research in Museum Studies series in August 2018. The book is based upon the work of my late partner, Dr. Elee Kirk, in the Oxford Museum of Natural History.
For this research, Elee used the method of photo-elicitation with child visitors to the Oxford Museum, to ask questions about museum experience. For Elee, the question that was often asked about children in museums — what are they learning? — often failed to do justice to the richness and depth of meaning that these spaces had for their child visitors.
Snapshots of Museum Experience was Elee’s attempt to think about children’s museum experience beyond an exclusive focus on learning. The book is based upon her thesis Crystal Teeth and Skeleton Eggs, and on the plan for the book that we both worked on prior to her death.
